This appeal comes exactly one month after the ceasefire agreement between the parties was implemented.
On Thursday, the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) urged Israel to withdraw its troops from areas it occupied in southern Lebanon following its campaign of bombings and military incursions in the Arab country. This appeal comes exactly one month after the ceasefire agreement between the parties was implemented.

“UNIFIL continues to urge the timely withdrawal of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) and the deployment of the Lebanese Armed Forces in southern Lebanon, as well as the full implementation of Resolution 1701 as a comprehensive path to peace,” stated a communique from the UN peacekeepers.
The statement noted that the international mission is “working closely” with the Lebanese Army while expediting recruitment efforts and redistributing troops to the south, in accordance with UN Security Council Resolution 1701.
The international resolution, which underpins the ceasefire agreement that took effect on November 27, calls for the deployment of the Lebanese Army along the border with Israel, the withdrawal of Israeli forces from occupied territory, and the redeployment of fighters from the Lebanese Shia group Hezbollah to the north of the Litani River.
Lebanese authorities have reported multiple Israeli violations of the ceasefire agreement in recent weeks. The Lebanese Army accused Israeli forces of “persisting in violating the ceasefire agreement, infringing on Lebanon’s sovereignty and its citizens, and destroying villages and towns in the south.”
“In this context, on December 26, 2024, forces loyal to the Israeli enemy infiltrated several points in the areas of Qantara, Adshit al Qusayr, and Wadi al Hujair in the south. The Lebanese Army reinforced its deployment in these areas,” a military statement read.
“There is concern about the continued destruction by the IDF of residential areas, agricultural lands, and road networks in southern Lebanon, which violates Resolution 1701,” the statement added, warning that all violations will be reported to the United Nations Security Council.
UNIFIL emphasized its readiness to play its role in supporting both countries in meeting their commitments and monitoring progress. This includes ensuring that the area south of the Litani River is free of armed personnel, assets, and weapons not authorized by the Government of Lebanon or UNIFIL, as well as respecting the Blue Line that separates the two countries.
